Machine Guns

Machine Guns and You

Machine Guns provide the greatest fire rates along with the chainsaws. Although having a very low accuracy and critical hit (based on the kind of machine gun), machine guns have become not only side arms for tough situations but even main arms for more grinding oriented players. What they lack in damage per shot they make up for with greater clips and fire rate. It is recommended to have some kind of melee weapon with you when taking those as main weapons, or you will find yourself in a (literal) hand on hand combat with tendrils, leapers, etc. A lot of the time, the classic 'spraying and praying' comes into effect for new players, a bad idea, considering ammo is not extremely easy to come by in lower levels.

Machine guns can be divided into four categories - Submachine Guns, Assault Rifles, Heavy Machine Guns and Miniguns:

  • Submachine Guns - Submachine guns are the low damage machine guns that are typically used in Critical Builds, and shoot cheap handgun ammunition. Sub machine guns benefit highly from a high critical stat .A critical stat of at lest 60 is recommended, but SMG benefit from up to 124 Critical although 124 is not required. However, SMG's other stat requirements, handgun ammo's cheapness and clip capacity makes up for its' high critical requirement., making SMG an economic choice for new players. And ironically, with very high critical (meaning 80+) a UMP does just 1.36 less damage than a Nodachi.
  • Assault Rifles - Assault Rifles were once the standard offensive weapon for modern troops. In DF, except the Hammerhead 47, they are basically lower-leveled HMGs Unlike the SMGs, these guns use high-powered rounds for more damage at the expense of lower accuracy and critical hit rates. They work well for lower levels that aren't bothering with the Critical Hit stat since their base DPS is close to their max dps stat. With greater dps than SMGs,they provide an easy way to dispatch zombies quickly.
  • Heavy Machine Guns - Heavy Machine Guns are crowd control weapons, used in Strength-focused builds. Although they need a lot of reloading, their magazine size makes up for it. They have good crowd control and high DPS. Truly an upgrade of assault rifles of the same caliber, dealing slightly more damage in each shot as well as have a 40% faster firing rate.
  • Miniguns - Miniguns is the term pointing to all Gatling-style machine guns. Although they employ epic ammo consumption rate (F***ing Fast! Firing Speed), epic stat consumption, extremely low accuracy, and extremely slow reloading speed, they simply pay it out with extreme raw power and knockback. It is notable that all Miniguns shoot in a buck shot (shotgun) style, resulting in employed knockback. However, Accuracy produces a different result to Minigun (tighten the projectiles AND centers the shot) from Shotguns (only centers the shot)

Requirements

Minimal proficiency requirements depend on the type of the weapon. The weakest machine gun - the Skorpion - requires 15 points. Submachine guns require very high Critical Hit stats to be effective, while heavier machine guns require additional Strength to equip.

Combat Outside - Loot/Scout

With low accuracy, machine guns are poor loot run weapons and should be fired only at clusters of zombies to make sure you hit them . Make sure to fire in short bursts, so that you don't use up any more bullets than absolutely necessary, as each shot raises aggro. Calculating shots needed to kill a certain type of zombie is rather easy with machine guns, as the low to very low critical rate means that the damage-per-second output is relatively stable. Basically, try to rely on melee weapons when looting.

Aggro Combat (Multiplayer)

This is where machine guns are designed to be used. Machine-guns are built for wiping out large groups of zombies quickly . Classed as a support weapon, the machine gun works best in conjunction with the more accurate Pistol or Rifle - the MG to sow general destruction, and the pistol or rifle to snipe any stragglers .

1.) SMG's are best when having high critical, as they have the highest accuracy of all MG's and with maxed critical the UMP can do just 1.36 less DPS than a Nodachi meaning it can take down groups quickly.

2.) Assault Rifles (AR's) are good since their base DPS exceeds that of SMG's. They have lower accuracy, meaning it'll be best if you stay close to the group or fire at the center of a large mob.

3.) HMGs are the 2nd most powerful class of MG's, dealing extremely high DPS and firing very quickly . The weakest HMG, Fm Mitrail , does up to 175.39 dmg per second, or over 20 DPS higher than any AR other than the HammerHead47 . They are Great for taking out bosses quickly , but are near useless against other zombies unless you are close to them due to their low accuracy . Note : HMG's are best at taking out a boss and large group quickly , but due to their ammo-consumption rate , its best if you take out small group with other weapons.

4.) Minigun: The minigun is a beast , extremely costly to purchase and just a little less costly to maintain . Best against groups due to its shotgun-style shots and extremely fast firing speed and because it has the highest dmg per shot of any MG .

One of the downsides is ammo consumption. Machine guns go through ammo like there's no tomorrow; and in an intense firefight you can go through a shockingly large number of bullets in a short period of time. Make sure you have a backup weapon for when you run out. Also try not to waste too much ammo - only use it when necessary ( when there is a large mob running towards you and you want to kill it fast )

Advantages and Disadvantages

Submachine Guns

Advantages

  • Due to their low costs and cheap ammo, submachine guns are a economical choice.
  • With high enough critical, a UMP will deal more damage per second than a Katana.
  • Submachine guns have the highest accuracy of all machine guns which puts Submachine gun users at a advantage over other assault rifle and heavy machine gun users.
  • Submachine guns have the highest ammo per box capacity (800 rounds per box).
  • Due to their low stat requirement and almost no strength requirement - Submachine guns are stat saving.

Disadvantages

  • Unless you have VERY HIGH critical , preferable 124 critical hit, then Submachine guns deal very low damage per second.
  • They still have low accuracy compared to rifles and pistols.
  • Due to their low damage per second, it can talk awhile to kill stronger zombies or other players.

Assault Rifles

Advantages

  • They have higher damage per second than SMG's .
  • They do not require any stats in critical.

Disadvantages

  • They have lower accuracy than Submachine Guns.
  • They have lower critical chance than SMG's, .
  • They require higher strength than submachine guns. Assault Rifles require 50 to 80 strength to use.
  • Their ammo box capacity is only 600 compared to SMG's 800 rounds.

Heavy Machine Guns

Advantages

  • They deal the second highest damage per second.
  • Due to their knockback , it is very useful in certain situations ( if you want to escape from a house and zeds are blocking the door , you can push them out of the way by shooting at them )

Disadvantages

  • Heavy Machine Guns are stat-hungry weapons. They require 80 to 100 strength to be equip. And to function properly , above 50 in accuracy.
  • They have the second lowest critical hit chance and accuracy of all machine guns.
  • They consume ammo faster than all other weapons, save for miniguns.

Miniguns

Advantages

  • They have the highest fire rate, meaning highest damage per second of firearm.
  • They have the highest damage per hit of any machine gun.
  • They have a shotgun-style buckshot, which causes greater knock back than that of HMG's.
  • They have the highest ammo capacity of all guns ( e.g : Vulcan holds 300 bullets ).

Disadvantages

  • Miniguns are the most stat-hungry weapons in the game. 100 Strength is needed to equip both the Vulcan and GAU-19 and to function properly 100 accuracy and reloading is needed.
  • They use up a large amount of ammo in very small amount of time.
  • The ammo used is very costly and add in the fact that they use up a large amount of ammo in seconds, people spend thousands of cash just for one fight.

A mysterious SMG, able to rip anything in its path as its namesake suggests. Crafted from the remains of the victims that became prey to the infected, this weapon possesses great power, light weight, and is rather cheap to use. Be warned however, this weapon's power comes at a great price, for some inexperienced survivors have supposedly died from using it. Some owners say they can hear faint cries and screams echoing from this weapon's firing chamber.

This weapon can only be bought from the Credit Shop for 1250 credits (1000 for Gold Members). It was on sale from October 16th, 2012 until November 5th, 2012.

Scrap Value: $ 40,050 ($ 80,100)
One of the most powerful submachine guns available to any survivor lucky enough to get one, the Dusk SMG is perfect for going up against even the largest swarms. Being capable of dealing out more damage per shot than the similar K-50M or Criss Victor, this powerful weapon combines the speed and power of an assault rifle with the compactness and (relative) cheapness of an SMG. One of the biggest appeals of this weapon, and also one of the most obvious differences than most Dusk gear, is the gun's light weight. Made with a presumably expensive, unknown metal, this gun only weighs about 4 pounds with a full magazine. Even the weakest survivor can carry it easily, and the strength of the metal ensures that it won't explode or warp from extensive sustained fire.

This weapon cannot be found in the city but is available in the Elite Shop for $700,000.

The Uziel 14mm is a heavily modified MP5 SMG. Named after the fallen Angel of Mercy who served Gabriel according to Biblical accounts, this submachine gun is anything but merciful. Designed by Fairview's engineers, this gun looks more like an assault rifle than an SMG. Despite being a custom design by Fairview's engineers, copies of this gun seem to be found rather frequently in the End Zones (the most likely cause of this is that they were left by survivors who were killed by the powerful infected in these areas). One of the more curious features of the gun is the short blade mounted under the barrel. Survivors who attempted to use this blade as a close-combat weapon reported it as being virtually useless, becoming dulled by only a few stabs. Rumors have surfaced that a few newbie engineers insisted on adding the blade simply to make the gun look "cool"... Fairview's guild of engineers declined to comment on the subject, only asking that survivors not rely on the blade as a weapon at all.

Handshock A8 (Unique)This item is unique and as such it can only be obtained in special ways and/or is non-transferable. For a full list of such items, visit the Special Gear article

Damage per Second: 101.14 (182.06)
Damage per hit: 11.8 (21.24)
8.57 Hit(s) per Second

The baby brother to the newly-designed Uziel, the Handshock was so-named because of its observed habit of vibrating intensely while being fired. Engineers ascribed this as an unintended side-effect of combining high firing rate and high-caliber ammunition into the Handshock's small, compact frame. As such, the weapon requires a modest level of machine gun proficiency to properly fire without the vibrations causing a survivor to drop it by accident. Survivors will also need to have sufficient strength to wield this weapon, as the alloys used to ensure the weapon could withstand such intense firepower also make it somewhat heavy.

This has been on sale from July 26th 2013 till August 20th 2013 in the credit shop for 1500 credits.

Scrap Value: $ 3,250 ($ 6,500)
Real Name: M16A3 / M16A4
Standard US Military issue for over 40 years, the M16 has a modular design capable of accepting grenade launchers, flashlights, and lasers attachments. Renowned for its accuracy and innovative new design, but not for its reliability, a stigma it has not shaken off to this day, despite anecdotes for cleaning it. Unsurprisingly, both SWAT armories and local Navy/Marine Corps outposts yielded some fully automatic M16A3s, and some M16A4 that were subsequently modified by local engineers to fire fully automatic again. Good for a "last hope" weapon, but ammo isn't cheap.

The Fusil Automatique Léger ("Light Automatic Rifle") or FAL is a self-loading, selective fire battle rifle produced by the Belgian armaments manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN). During the Cold War it was adopted by many North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries, with the notable exception of the United States. It is one of the most widely used rifles in history, having been used by more than 90 countries. The FAL was predominantly chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO round, and because of its prevalence and widespread use among the armed forces of many NATO countries,it was nicknamed "The right arm of the Free World" during the Cold War. As it is popular with police, - surprise - Fairview's police had a fair amount of these weapons.

The legendary Automatic Kalashnikov Model 47 was one of the first true assault rifles. Due to its relative cheapness and incredible reliability, it is by far the most widely used assault rifle in the world. With its powerful 7.62 x 39 mm round, the AK-47 can penetrate fabric armor, as well as penetrate light cover to hit targets hiding behind it. Though later versions use a fragmenting 5.45x39 mm round, this classic variant doesn't.

Real Name: M4 Carbine
A shortened variant of the M16, the M4 was commonly used by the U.S. military since the early 1990s. Both lighter and shorter than its predecessor, the M4 almost completely replaced the M16 in the US Army. Unfortunately, the majority of these weapons were thought to be stockpiled at armories outside of Fairview when the outbreak occurred -- until soldiers uncovered a previously-unnoticed cache of them in the back rooms of an abandoned Fairview arsenal. Since then, engineers have been scrambling to convert the copies of this weapon found in the many Army supply trucks scattered throughout the city.

Determined to build an assault rifle that made most other assault rifles look like cap guns, Fairview's engineers finally cranked out a gun that screams raw power, bordering on overkill. As the first custom-built weapon to top the AK-47 in both damaging power and magazine capacity, the gun was also christened with the same identifying number as the AK-47 itself. Ironically, the gun seems to have been built on the same structural design as the M16. True to its name, though, the weapon hammers zombies and anything else in its path with a relentless stream of 14mm rounds.

The M60, officially the United States Machine Gun, Caliber 7.62 mm, M60, is a family of American general-purpose machine guns firing 7.62×51mm NATO cartridges from a disintegrating belt of M13 links. There are several types of live ammunition approved for use in the M60, including ball, tracer, and armor-piercing rounds. A very prominent machine gun throughout the Vietnam War, it was produced in 1957 up to current times. Throughout its times, it has been produced in many variants, and still in use with various militaries around the world.

Destructive and mysterious, no one knows how this weapon was created, who actually designed and built it, or where it even came from. Rumor has it that this heavy machine gun was crafted from the bodies of slain survivors that were never recovered. But, as it seems that only a few highly secretive survivors have been able to find this unique weapon and use it, nothing is confirmed. Should you be lucky enough to get your hands on one of these, there is virtually no being, living or dead, that can hope to stand in your way. Be warned, however, that this weapon possesses a mind of its own: It may turn against survivors who are not able to use it correctly. One only has to ask any of the survivors who have lost a finger (or more) trying to maintain it, or been burned by the red-hot bullet casings it spat in their face, to see the proof.

It could only be bought from the Credit Shop for 2000 credits (1750 for Gold Members). It was on sale from November 19th, 2012 until December 31st, 2012.

In the never-ceasing race to build a machine gun capable of matching the GAU-19 in raw power, the engineers of Fairview's four outposts joined together in a massive collaboration. The outcome of their work was the XLGunner-8 -- a veritable beast of a gun that has left even AdminPwn's own Dusk engineers somewhat green with envy. While not as accurate as the Dusk MAG, and holding less ammunition per drum, the XLGunner is more than superior in pure damaging power. Thanks to the gun's large 120-round ammo drums, the XLGunner is able to sustain the firing speed of a minigun. In a field test of the gun, engineers were attacked by a Titan, but to their surprise, the XLGunner not only held the monster at bay when they opened fire on it, it actually drove the Titan back long enough for a boss-hunting party to arrive and gun the beast down. Any survivor who gets his/her hands on one of these will quickly find out what it truly means to wield 'the big guns.'

This weapon cannot be found in the city, but from December 10th to January 10th, you can buy it for the Credit values stated above.

List of Miniguns

The Damage values in brackets indicate the averaged damage that can be achieved with the maximum critical hit chance. Miniguns, unlike the other Heavy Machine Guns and similarly to Shotguns, have split bullets. That means that every shot splits into a few pellets even though only one bullet is used. This allows the Miniguns to have better knockback and crowd control features than the other Machine Guns.

Real Name: M61 Vulcan
The Vulcan is a hydraulically or pneumatically driven, six-barreled, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style cannon, which fires various ammunition types at an extremely high rate. Yet somehow, the engineers of Fairview city has managed to rig this machine to fire the much more common .50 BMG ammo, making firing the Vulcan possible in the condition of the city. The M61 and its derivatives have been the principal cannon armament of United States military fixed-wing aircraft for fifty years.

Real Name: GAU-19/A
The GAU-19 is an electrically driven Gatling Gun that fires deadly .50 BMG (12.7 x 99 mm) rounds at up to 1000-2000 rounds per minute. Weighing in at a hefty 139 pounds and having a recoil force exceeding 500 pounds, the GAU-19 normally cannot be wielded by a man and is intended for use in helicopters, on ships and vehicles - however, engineers have, somehow, someway, modified the minigun for human use. These modifications include reducing the firing speed to "only" about 700 rounds per minute, implementing a new cartridge feeding & firing system as well as material replacements at various parts of the gun. In conjunction, all these changes reduced felt recoil by massive amounts and cut the overall weight almost in half, which greatly enhances the usability of the GAU-19 by humans. This weapon is very hard to procure, considering its rarity and the cost of modifications, all of which make the minigun extremely expensive. This gun possesses the power to obliterate a mob of zombies in a few seconds.

This weapon could only be bought from the Credit Shop for 12000 credits (11000 for Gold Members). It was on sale from October 11, 2008 until January 9th, 2010. It was discontinued due to several incidents of credit card fraud occurring with the purchase of this weapon. An additional reason given for its removal from the market was that AdminPwn considered the gun to be "overpowered". As of May 12, 2014, the GAU-19 and its unlimited ammo variant have both been restored to the Credit Shop, although it is hinted that they may only be available for a limited amount of time.
