A Sniper's Guide to Rifles[]
Naturally accurate, with a good base chance for critical hits and a respectable damage output shot-for-shot compared to many other weapons, Rifles serve well as primary weapons and are effective in most builds due to their inherent strengths. Their reasonably high capacities and powerful rounds allow them to be effective even in the hands of characters with lower values in accuracy and reloading.
All Rifles up to the VSS Vintorez have High Critical Chance, requiring 112 Critical Hit points to reach the maximum critical chance of 80%. Most high-level Rifles (with the exception of the Dusk, X-Dusk Carbine, Crossbow, and the X-Garand) instead have Very High Critical Chance, only requiring 79 Critical Hit points to reach the same maximum point.
There are two kinds of Rifles: Carbines and Bolt Action:
- Bolt Action Rifles are characterized by their Very High Accuracy" and high damage per shot, and only 1 round per second fire rate. This allows Bolt Action Rifles to achieve important 1-crit kill or 2-crit kill damage points against certain zombie types earlier than Carbines.
- Carbines are characterized by their High Accuracy and lower damage per shot, but higher 1.5 rounds per second fire rate. This provides better crowd control, which is handy when facing groups of weaker zombies.
Low tier Rifles are extremely powerful compared to all other types of weapons, with the caveat being the expensive ammunition they use. This poses a significant handicap for lower-level players who cannot loot ammo in sufficiently large quantities, as opposed to Pistols whose ammunition is available in an abundant quality, and Melee Weapons which require no further upkeep at all. As proficiency goes up, however, both the cost and damage differences gradually fade, to the point where late-game Rifles perform and cost practically the same as late-game Pistols.
Requirements[]
Rifles have no strength requirements. The first rifle available, the Beretta RX4, requires 10 proficiency points to use. The Farmer class starts out with a Mini-41, along with 80 rounds of 5.5mm.
Early-game Rifles require 112 Critical Hit, while late-game Rifles require 79 Critical Hit to reach optimal performance. High accuracy stat is not as important with Rifles due to their inherent accuracy, and Reloading can also be passed over to some degree due to most Rifles' sizable capacity.
Looting/Scouting[]
Since they only draw aggro from zombies currently on-screen, Rifles are ideal for scouting and looting runs in the Inner City. Some general tips:
- Rifles can easily hit distant zombies with relative consistency. Try to snipe them before they get close.
- Stay in the open. Due to their low rates of fire, Rifles are not the best weapons to use in close quarters, especially against large mobs, and a single missed shot can be costly. With a high critical stat, this is not as big a concern, provided the Rifle is one of the faster-firing ones.
- Be ammo conscious. With relatively slow reloads (unless one has high Reloading), learning to reload whenever you get a quiet moment is important. As with any weapon, one trick is to hit "R" just before you transition to another screen, as this results in an instantaneous reload once you reach the next block.
Aggro Combat[]
Similar to Pistols and Melee Weapons, Rifles are not designed to fight off hordes of zombies at all. Your best bet in this situation is to try to reach a safe space to weather the storm, find an exit from the situation, or use another weapon altogether.
Advantages and Disadvantages[]
Advantages
- Early-game Rifles are significantly more powerful than other weapons.
- Rifles are relatively silent and do not cause aggro spike, allowing it to be used extensively during looting.
- Rifles naturally starts out with the best accuracy in the game, meaning there is little need to put points in increasing accuracy.
- Most Rifles have a large magazine capacity.
- Bolt Action Rifles have the greatest per-shot damage of all weapons.
Disadvantages
- Early-game Rifles only have High instead of Very High Critical Hit chance.
- Rifle ammunition has smaller box sized compared to handgun ammunition (1,200 per box compared to pistols having 1,600 per box), and are generally more expensive.
- Bolt Action Rifles have the lowest fire rate in the game, which results in almost no crowd control against hordes.

The Barrett M82 was primarily used as an "anti-materiel rifle", meaning that it was not intended for direct use against live targets, but to damage and destroy equipment like trucks, lightly armored APCs, and parked aircraft by using the devastating .50 BMG round. The A2 variety (dropped from production) uses a bullpup design which places the action behind the trigger mechanism, which makes it possible to shorten the overall length of the rifle while retaining barrel length. |

A mysterious rifle allegedly able to pierce anything that comes in its way, with accuracy exceeding any other known rifle in the world. It was rumored to be created from bones, taken from the remains of snipers who were unable to survive the first outbreak. Some survivors speak with much horror of having experienced a twisted craving to kill their fellow survivors when wielding this weapon, particularly other marksmen-- or anyone toting a rifle, for that matter. All of those survivors agree this gun is NOT for the faint of heart. If you listen closely, you can even still hear the loud cries of the dead it has claimed. Beware: Should you wander into the cross-hairs of anyone who wields this weapon, then you have virtually no hope of escaping a sudden, silent death. Release: August 20th, 2012 - September 10th, 2012

The Ironsight 33-F was developed through the gunsmiths' attempts to make use of scrapped sniper rifles they found in the Yard. They put a particular focus on finding a way to integrate the most effective components of various rifles into one gun, and spent a great deal of time modifying these parts to be interchangeable. The weapon ultimately turned out drastically better than expected and is proving to be one of the most powerful rifles we have. One of the gun's most popular features is the extended scope (built from parts of the M82A2's standard scope and several smaller scopes), which has allowed survivors to pinpoint targets at distances well beyond the ranges of pre-existing scoped rifles. |

An ambitious attempt at replicating the only Gauss Rifle in existence, the Marksman G8 relies on batteries that can be recharged with a companion hand-crank generator to propel standard 14mm rounds to Mach 5 speed, well beyond what a traditional 14mm rifle can do. This, combined with the fact that it fires the whole bullet (65% more bullets per bullet!), gave the Marksman a definite firepower advantage against other rifles of its time. Eventually, its fragility and lack of spare parts led to its discontinuation, and it was superseded for the most part by the more conventional and faster firing Worg Carbine. Weapon Type: Carbine

A devastating carbine based on the FN SCAR-20, a renowned pre-outbreak battle rifle. The original rifle's body and components were rebuilt using titanium steel to prevent the gun from exploding when firing the more powerful 14mm rifle rounds, allowing it to deliver rifle rounds to the face of the infected at a high velocity and splatter them into nothing but a bloody mess. Like most of the gunsmith's 2nd generation designs, this weapon features a stubby bayonet that's somehow even shorter than the flash hider it's mounted beneath, which proved to be... just as effective as the other ones in the same line, to put it in a positive way. |

With the design for the N-9/2025 somewhat functional on a pistol round, gunsmiths in Fairview carried on by attempting to adopt it to an intermediate rifle cartridge, like the 7.62x51mm NATO round that can be readily produced at Fort Pastor. For the rifle part, some of the most accurate M1 Garand copies available have been further customized with a camouflaged synthetic body, a recoil compensator, a high powered scope, and extra "magazine" space to hold 3 standard en block clips. It is ultimately uncertain however of why the archaic Garand was preferred over more modern rifles - maybe the gunsmith tasked with this just really liked the *ping* reload sound? The science lads at Secronom Bunker recently tested a brand new anti-zombie serum to improve upon the Devil Heart-based N-9/2025, by outfitting a few pre-outbreak hunting crossbows with bolts full of the solution. Results are mixed: The serum proved effective at inhibiting zombies's regenerative functions and attacking infected cells, but ineffective against humans and too fragile to be used in any type of firearm. The ZA M-137 "Silver Lance" is a prototype 14.5×114mm anti-materiel sniper designed in the Czech Republic, aimed at countering the rise of heavy infantry armors such as the Exterminator and Bio Reactive. Like its smaller cousin M-93, the M-137 uses a scaled-up Mauser 98 action dating back all the way to the Tankgewehr M1918, the first anti-materiel in history, though with plenty of modernizations to make the weapon more accurate and less painful to use. Several of these rifles were imported to Fairview to test the Scarab Reactive, before the sudden outbreak put that on indefinite hiatus. As the rifle's first few blueprints did not contain a trace of its initial name, it was given a new designation by Fairview citizens in line with the Ironsight 33-F. Release: July 27th, 2021

Following the initial success of the Cryo Launcher, Secronom Bunker R&D went ahead and experimented with designing "cryo-based" projectile weapons. To maximize effect of the coolant, a 3-step delivery system was proposed: The first AP round digs a hole through armor, the second chemical-filled round freezes the exposed flesh, and the third hollow-point round rips the now frozen tissue apart. The prototype battle rifle C12 "Hailstorm" is a manifestation of that concept. Test results were promising; the rifle proved to be particularly effective against superheavy flaming infected, thanks to the coolant lowering the target's body temperature and disrupting its regenerative effect. On the other hand, some concerns were raised over the rifle's "erratic recoil", which occasioanlly threw off aim and prevented the full burst from landing.
